Global Game Jam - Bored Room
Global Game Jam is an annual event where game developers of all walks (hobbyists, professionals, students etc) meet and form teams to make a game over one weekend. There’s a theme which is revealed via the interwebs on Friday evening, this year it was ‘Deception’. Last year I ground my hands to a pulp producing ~30hrs worth of art, which equated to not much sleep! This year I...

The mechanic
A scantily clad one at that. Not the most functional of outfits, but well aerated! Anyway, I wanted to run with the backlighting look of last night’s sketch. It seems like a good initiative to do a study and then apply it to a completely fabricated scene. I know the lighting’s flawed in parts but the image has a sort of graphic novel feel to it.

Emily Haines portrait
Something pretty non-exhaustive this evening - A lighting study of Emily Haines from Metric.

Vue De Monde
While in Melbourne I was treated to a meal at Vue De Monde courtesy of a generous soul I did some design work for last year. It’s a very fancy French restaurant. So fancy that I needed to adapt my eating habits. Instead of mashing food into my face with a spade I had to use cutlery. Furthermore, I cut my food into little pieces. I did consider eating the smoked Kingfish fillet (my main) in...

All your base are belong to SB
Jack mentioned my Florence Welch portrait reminded him of the infamous All Your Base image, so I thought I’d do a tribute sketch. For great justice. In other news, I got back from Melbourne on Monday. Excuse the laziness re: my sketchblog. I’ve been stuck in holiday mode. I have been working on a commissioned family portrait though, but can’t really post it til completed. I...

Zombieland - see it
I’m over in Melbourne at the moment, and I scored a new plane on the flight over (Qantas) with ample entertainment options! Despite having access to Inglorious Basterds and Where The Wild Things Are, both of which I’ve been meaning to see, I was strangely drawn to Zombieland. Turns out I got more than I bargained for as I was struggling not to audibly laugh for most of the movie. The...

Hottest 100 of 2009
I was deciding on my vote for the Triple J Hottest 100 of 2009, and after watching the clip for Drumming Song I thought a portrait sketch of Florence Welch would aptly tie in with a Hottest 100 blog post. After all, she is quite the hot sauce, with flame red locks to match. So without further ado, here’s my pick from the list in alphabetical order: Basement Jaxx - She’s No Good ...

3D-appropriate proportions: concept art take 2
Took another stab at really exaggerating  proportions as described in my previous Torchlight post. I think this monster would read well in 3D.

Torchlight
My Steam friends have probably noticed I recently purchased Torchlight… For $5 I thought I would’ve finished it by now but it just keeps going and going. I originally wanted to complete it just so I could do a blog post saying I’d “finished WoW, but not really”. It does seem really well made from a player’s point of view though. It’s Diablo with all the...

The year that was 2009
I noticed Nick’s done a retrospective. I thought I would, too, for the sake of having some sort of compiled record. Career - Concept artist to freelance graphic designer/artist: I quit Interzone Games in March, after over 2 years there as a concept artist (with graphic design side duties), having worked on Interzone Futebol since its infancy. The only person left from the original ~14...

Happy New Year!
So, for a ‘daily’ blog I’ve sure neglected it lately. I’ve been recovering from food poisoning, but here is the last sketch I did in 09: I’d like to start a-new in 2010. Last year was… not one of my better years, to say the least. The ups were fleeting and the lows were so very low. But what a transitional year! I think all the little accomplishments and...
