Industrial interior
Haven’t done an interior in forever. Just some typical videogame environment. As you may have guessed I’m quite fond of Valve’s games (and their aesthetic). Plus a WIP as requested. I didn’t really do a drawing for this. The first frame was probably only 5 or so minutes into painting. Very quick blocking in.

Girl with parasol colour study
I said the girl with the red parasol from the Guerilla Laneway Exhibition would be my next colour/lighting study, and here it is. Digital watercolour and tinting brushes in Painter X.

Slice n dice, but mostly slice
The Summer exhibition opening is tomorrow (Tuesday)!! I’m ready! Today I printed, guillotined, or otherwise sliced the artwork tags and signage bits and pieces for tomorrow. Tomorrow that arrow will point to the exhibition info-card, so come along and receive your free info-card because as the text suggests; it was made specifically for you. Not that guy, just you. That other...

A little aside
Last Friday at the Beyond Motion office a bunch of ex-coworkers joined our prototyping crew of 4 for a festive beer o’clock. Late in the afternoon/evening (after most everyone else had left) Nick and Ellen ventured onto Omegle, a site which pairs you with a random person for anonymous chat. It sounded like they were having fun so I thought I’d give it a try (again). While Nick was...

Summer exhibition interview in Xpress
I did an interview with the Forks Open Doors duo for Xpress this week, you can view it online here. I’m not very eloquent in this interview, possibly due to post-lunch-eating-drowsiness. It’s a pretty great writeup, though - Emma’s writing skills are good. And stuff. How’s that for eloquent? Anyway, the Summer exhibition draws near! It opens this Tuesday!! Get down to...

Guerilla Laneway Exhibition timelapse
Who’s that sexy man in the preview frame? He appears to be holding one of my artworks. Actually I feature pretty heavily in the start of this since I put my artworks up just above the crotch-level camera then loitered around chatting to various art-istes and designers. Also note the subliminal Summer advertising around 0:19. ha I don’t even remember who held the flyer. Probably...

Unfortunately I blocked this in so quickly I forgot to save the base sketch (scribbly linework), but here’s a WIP animation showing the painting in progress: As a sidenote to anyone who might save animated .gif’s for web in the future: Making the bottom section of this image transparent instead of white for the first 5 frames (before it was painted) lopped off about 40kb on a...

Team Fortress 2 propaganda poster
I designed this poster for the Team Fortress 2 demoman vs soldier propaganda contest. Just something pretty simple with limited colours. I was gonna add text (taglines) but decided to keep it visual. I also submitted a version with this logo at the top: Beware: game talk ahead. If you don’t play TF2 tune out now. Regarding the class war in general -it feels like a lot more people...

Guerilla Laneway exhibition
I’m just about to head to the Guerilla Laneway exhibition and put up my artworks. If you’re reading this in the future, having seen my work and bludgeoned ‘facepocalypse.com’ into your keyboard, then welcome to my blog! This is where I draw, paint, post about my upcoming exhibitions, show some freelance work and talk about various unrelated things like the angry bobtail...

Elite Body Concepts logo design + development
There were some minor trials with the ‘t’ for this logo so I ended up redoing it with an unmistakable ‘t’. Here’s the final version: And the heavily debated version (across 3 posts): Now… Read on for an insight into development. Beware: lengthy post. I was tasked with branding an established personal training business in light of future expansion. This...

Eagle eye WIP
Thought I’d do a digital painting in colour for the Guerilla Laneway action since Officeworks does pretty cheap large format printing. I started this in greyscale and it’s turning out surprisingly well… Even the skintones, which are typically a problem area, aren’t turning out too badly. Still, I’ll keep refining it tomorrow. And by tomorrow I mean today, after...

Monster with lazereyez!
Ugh, I am so bad at colouring greyscale paintings it’s ridiculous. If I could be arsed I’d go back over this in Painter and completely repaint the background, then paint all the highlights properly. I don’t mind how the low contrast areas turned out (legs and arms), and I’m pretty happy with the wonky lazer beams shooting from its eyes (I don’t think there’s any...

What's all this then?
If you happen to own a warehouse and haven’t checked it in awhile you might want to go and make sure there’s no plant infestation. Because there might be! Just consult this painting I did. It’s practically non-fiction. I paint the truth.

1337 BC final logo
Nick took the liberty of fixing the logo for me: Thanks, Nick! *dusts hands* My work here is done. To see more of his work come along to the Summer exhibition! Only 2 weeks away! Also, there’s an eventface here.

Just add water
Water, water, and more water. So the last one definitely reads as elite, amirite? Although I made ‘lit’ slightly closer (fixed the kerning) for the pic below: I think it’s between the first and last… Or the way way back original one. hah PS. Thankyou all for your feedback!

How about now?
Is there any doubt as to what this says? Is this dumbing it down to an unnecessary extent (see Greg’s comment on the previous post)? I’ve reduced the incline to 5degrees and extended the crossbar. Also here’s a comparison with the old incline:

What does this say?
Ok, so I’m second guessing myself again… This is where you can be the designer and share your thoughts. Even though this is on my own time (although it’s quick) I don’t want my client constantly being asked if it’s “elile” or “elite”. I still think option (1) is comprehensible, but maybe not. Did you read “elile” or...

Decompile
I don’t really know how to lead into this image, so I won’t. It was kind of fun scribbling away in greyscale though. I nitty gritty’d it more than I usually would for a daily sketch… At least in some parts. I think I’m gonna concentrate on some epic portfolio-building art after the Summer exhibition. I have my eye on a few locals I’d like to work with. More...

Night terror
Yeaaa, this probably isn’t appropriate for the laneway exhibition. I don’t really want to give any children walking through nightmares… Or do I?… No. No I don’t. Although that could be a pretty brilliant marketing strategy! “My child has been afraid of going to bed ever since he/she saw Simon Boxer’s sketches at the Guerilla Laneway Exhibition.” ...

Guerilla laneway exhibition
The Guerilla Laneway exhibition is next Sunday. It’s open for anyone to submit up to 5 A3 images (photocopies recommended) to display in a public laneway space in Perth. It costs $1 per entry - you just rock up and stick them on whatever wallspace you can find. I’ll probably just put up a few yet-to-be-created sketches, and some recently created sketches, such as this one:

Mecha
A few things I’m lovin: - Early Xmas festivities. - Bertie Blackman’s latest album. Thought I’d do a quick sketch before bed. Possibly against my better judgement as I should get up for sportstuffs in ~5hrs. If anyone feels like getting their sketch on tonight (Sunday), Dr Sketchy’s burlesque life drawing is on at BamBOO, 7pm-9:30pm.

Level of detail
So here’s another thing I need to be mindful of: level of detail and edge variation. I pretty rarely have soft edges as my work is more painterly, but I want to push the depth and be more mindful of this. It really helps to add focus. This sketch is pretty half-arsed compared to the work of someone like CryptCrawler, who is one of the best artists I’ve seen in regards to lighting...

Slicey
Trying to get more dynamic posing, and working on my values. It kind of reminds me of Ashley Wood’s art, amongst others’. I think instinctively I like a lot of the same treatments he uses - messy (but contained) brushwork, sharp angles, spiky shapes, and lots of cutting back (shaping the silhouette of things by painting over it with the colour behind, as opposed to painting the edge of...
