Life drawn
Been awhile since an update. My recent life has been consumed by work and a sister’s wedding festivities. Mostly work.
Here are a few life drawings. 30mins each, at a pretty leisurely pace.

Spawn Delicious! →
This is the game I worked on for the 48hr Global Gamejam 2012 with a programmer and some outsourced music. It’s more of an ~interactive experience~ than a game at the moment, but we hope to make it more fun in the nearish future.

2011 retrospective
After the 2010 half-year stint in the US, 2011 continued in nomadic fashion, having stayed in 13 different houses/apartments for at least a week during the course of the year.
As far as location goes, here’s a “Where in the world was Simon?” pie chart.
Following 2010’s intense art studies and exposure to the San Francisco scene I wanted to get back to making money as...

"What do I study to become a concept artist?"
This question was posed awhile back in the Perth illustrators’ group on facebook and generated a bit of discussion. I thought I’d transfer some of my thoughts into a blog post for all to see! In context it was referring to courses/education available as a path to getting a job. I’ll just jump right in with my response; I don’t tell any employers I have a graphic design...

Monster concept paintover
Did a quick paintover last night for an aspiring concept artist friend, Jacob.
Thought others might benefit from this, so I’ll post the paintover first then expand on some critiques.
Note: This is entirely his concept and design, I just did a 10min paintover with some colour adjustment and extra details.
The rendering was pretty solid, and limiting the value range a bit (through curves...

What I imagine Skyrim is like
I’m a little hesitant to play it. I like to complete games… Instead I made this comic:

Game/Play exhibition at the NGV →
I’ve got a few artworks in the Game/Play exhibition at the National Gallery of Victoria, check it out if you’re around Melbourne!
It starts tomorrow and runs until November 5th in the NGV Studio Gallery.

Process for Sydney-based cityscape
I always enjoy seeing how other artists work so I’ve put together this little process insight post for the last cityscape.
I should note all the setting photos are provided to me, as are most signage graphics (like the Krishna Cola graphics). I occasionally design some signage but that’s not my role on the project. Although I do have to make the flat colour vector graphics look like...

Fragile, keep dry - mech concept
Yesterday Alex Konstad posted some sweet mechs and I was totally inspired to paint my own. Really needed a self-indulgent day so put everything on hold and worked away at this for the past handful of hours. And now I feel rejuvenated!

Post-Apocalyptic Brisbane process
Decided to go with no birds. I prefer the desolate feel as it seems more threatening and eery.
The narrative in this scene is largely implied. There aren’t many answers, mostly questions.
And a process .gif! Base -> Block in -> Refine shapes -> Shadows -> Final touches -> Grading

Hotpot (mis)adventure in Melbourne
Went out for hotpot this evening at Dainty Sichuan and it was incredibly good. I’ve never been a huge fan of hotpot previously but I guess I’d consider myself converted. We went for a beef and fish fillet kind of deal with bulk vegetables, as well as garland chrysanthemum - a long, leafy stalk type option.
Not overly familiar with chrysanthemum I got a little trigger happy and clearly...

Sleeping people sketches - Sydney->Perth
I’m back in Perth, albeit fleetingly. Sydney was very interesting; certainly more work-focused than Melbourne and Brisbane. I visited a modest handful of film and advertising studios and met great (and talented) people at every one of them!
I got totally lost trying to find Halo Pictures in Manly though! The city does suffer the odd navigational issue as not all streets are signed. Also,...

Phoenix painting timelapse
Last year I did this live painting at an outdoors gig in Perth. There’s a lot of glare at the start of the painting which is a bit unfortunate, but my buddy Rich Kong filmed and compiled this cool little timelapse.

Bubbles
Currently staying with Martin in Sydney, and today happens to be his birthday!
The post-work routine often involves Trailer Park Boys so I thought I’d do a little painting of Bubbles to honour this occasion.

Lizard Lady
Doing the runaround in Sydney so I don’t have much to show - my blog’s suffered a little from the whole traveling thing. It’s mostly ‘work’ work when I sit down at the old pen and tablet device. And it really is old. It even has exposed wires. Plus Wacom don’t make the Intuos 3 anymore; they only make its next-generation, hotrod cousin.
Visited a few studios...

Post-Apocalyptic Perth matte painting process
A little process insight for my Post-Apocalyptic Perth environment concept. It’s pretty vague since I didn’t save iterations out as I went, so I just have the layers to toggle by the end of it.
I only used two photographs for this painting; the original plate and the sandy ground. All the other elements and modifications were painted.

Fujitsu Lifebook design - Designboom
Back in January when Nick and I had regular work parties we spent a day putting together an entry for the Fujitsu Lifebook competition.
Nick was the brains and I was the brunt. He’d been thinking about a direction for ~future computing~ for awhile and I helped aesthetically package it for the competition. It’s more of a tech-focused evolution of current computing, centered around the...

Reposed and repainted a bunch of stuff in the Vanquish Evil illustration (from where I was at with the WIP sketch).

Warcraft illustration WIP - Vanquish evil
Thought I’d partake in an assignment set by Blizzard to illustrate one of the Warcraft trading card concepts. There were 3 different card briefs to choose from but the one that I found most appealing was the Draenei Priest casting Vanquish Evil on a Flesh Giant. Which I will henceforth abbreviate to “Purple wiz zaps a zombietroll.”
Here’s a work-in-progress sketch:

Ruby Boots cover art colour options
Awhile ago I was contacted by Ruby Boots about doing some cover art for her upcoming EP titled “At Last”. To rip directly from myspace (since while I love music I struggle at declaring genres) her music is a blend of blues, country and folk.
She described an image in her mind of a cabin, and the feeling of returning to the one place you’re comfortable in. In this instance the...

Abstract landscape for Solar Barge booklet
In March 2010 I curated a group exhibition called Mythology.
After we’d started spreading the word I was contacted by Lyndon Blue, who performs as Solar Barge and plays Egyptian influenced, ambient post-rock with a loop pedal. He was volunteering to play at the exhibition opening, and after hearing his music I was keen to get him onboard. It really complimented what we were going for, and...

My Pecha Kucha Perth presentation slides with...
For anyone interested I’ve uploaded a .pdf of my slides here, and even added a few annotations (which weren’t on the delivered presentation) to fill in the verbal void.
And now the backstory…
Last weekend a friend of mine mentioned he was going to be presenting at an event called Pecha Kucha, and that they’d just had a speaker slot open up for Wednesday’s event. I...

Rethemed @sboxle twitter
To continue the retheming trend I’ve finished off the tiling background for my personal twitter. Here are a few options I tested:
The white background version is the original, except it was too distracting for the background. I’ve ended up running with the bottom right version.
